CONCEPT

Ruby Dora Design is a line of jewelry and body adornment created by Ruby McNeil. She uses three modes of production: Lost Wax casting, Hand-cut prototyping, and CAD/CAM* rapid prototyping.

Ruby Dora Design’s main emphasis in producing jewelry uses CAD/CAM rapid prototyping, which allows for customized pieces more attuned to a wearer’s lifestyle and esthetic preferences, making it possible for a relationship to develop between the artist and wearer, as well as the wearer and viewer. Rapid prototyping has the economic advantage of quick concept turnaround and potential economies of scale.

Hand-cut prototyping enables the artist to become involved in the process of experimentation divorced from the constraints of machines and digital technology. A constant communication between the artist and the material can develop which then results in a set of skills and experiences that can at times be further enhanced by CAD/CAM, or lead to forms of expression inaccessible to a machine approach to design.

Ruby Dora Design’s third approach to jewelry design and production uses the ancient method of Lost Wax casting. Many old designs existing in the public domain can be repurposed and rejuvenated, altered and manipulated, to suit a new generation. Much emphasis in this approach is given to the playful whimsy of objects reduced in size to a small scale, giving the wearer a portable memory device that enhances not only their beauty, but their savviness, as well.
